Wolfe and written by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, based on the play of the same name by August Wilson. The film, and its source play, focus on Ma Rainey, an influential blues singer, and dramatizes a turbulent recording session in 1920s Chicago. Rainey toured with the Wild Jazz Cats until 1926, after which she recorded with a variety of musicians under the name "Ma Rainey and her Georgia Jazz Band." Rainey also reportedly earned a reputation of being as savvy a businesswoman as she was a performer, but despite her frugality, she was known as someone who was always willing to help out with money if she could.
