(AP) - Leon Leyson, who was one of the youngest of 1,100 Jews saved from the Nazis by Oskar Schindler, has died in Southern California at 83. Leyson died Leon Leyson, the youngest Jew to be saved by Oskar Schindler and his famous list during the Holocaust, died Jan. 12 in Whittier, following a four-year struggle with lymphoma. He was 83. Born Leib Lejzon in Poland, Leon Leyson recalls with candor his childhood as a Jew under Nazi occupation. The youngest of five children, Leon recounts early memories of carefree summer days with his friends. His family had lived in the rural village of Narewka for more than 200 years.

With incredible luck, perseverance, and grit, Leyson was able to survive the sadism of the Nazis, including that of the demonic Amon Goeth, commandant of Plaszow, the concentration camp outside Krakow.
